People ready to pay tribute to war fallen
VETERANS, serving members of the armed forces and the public will gather across Rochdale to remember the fallen soldiers, sailors and airmen who made the ultimate sacrifice next weekend.
On Armistice Day, Friday, November 11, the mayor will lead a twominute silence with prayers by Rev Canon Shackleton at the war memorial opposite Rochdale town hall.
On Remembrance Sunday, November 13, people are asked to gather at Rochdale market from 10.15am for the parade at 10.30am. The service will take place at the Cenotaph at 10.50am.
Other services will also be taking place across the borough on Remembrance Sunday.
The parade through Littleborough will meet at Hare Hill House at 10.10am and leave for the memorial at 10.20am before a service at 10.50am.
In Milnrow the parade will meet at the Harmony Street band hut at 10.30am and leave for Milnrow Memorial Park at 10.40am. A service will take place at the Cenotaph at 10.55am.
The Wardle service will be taking place later in the day with the parade assembling at 2.15pm at the village square.
They will leave for the memorial at 2.30pm for a 3pm service.
In Whitworth the procession will leave from opposite the former town council offices (just north of the corner of Market Street and Tong Lane) at 10.20am, arriving at Whitworth’s Memorial Gardens in Facit at 10.40am, where a service will be held.
In Middleton the parade will assemble outside the Harbord Harbord pub on Long Street at 10.15am and leave at 10.25am.
The service at Middleton Remembrance Gardens will begin at 10.45am.
In Heywood the parade will meet on Tower Street from 9.30am and set off at 10.30am.
The service will begin at 10.55am at Heywood Memorial Gardens.
Coun Alan McCarthy, lead member for the Armed Forces, said: “Remembrance Day is about paying tribute not only to those who died but also to their families, those who were injured and those who survived.
“The message of remembrance needs to be passed on to future generations so by buying a poppy we pay a fitting tribute to all those brave men and women who served, and continue to serve, our country.”
