Highfield’s win down to tactical turn

- BEN SIMMONDS

HIGHFIELD overcame a strong side Limeside King George in the Newbold Tyres Premier Division.

Limeside flicked a long ball over the top and with just six minutes played took the lead.

The first half was completely dominated by Limeside in every aspect of the game, with Highfield counting their blessings to be down by only one goal at the interval.

A half-time tactical switch from Highfield proved to be the game-changer.

Wingbacks gave extra men in midfield and the difference was immediately evident as Matty Knowles found himself in a position to beat the keeper.

Their second soon followed, Knowles this time the creator as Scott Brierley headed home with a powerful diving header.

Limeside found themselves under relentless pressure, again Knowles was the danger man.

After receiving the ball, he cut inside to slide the ball past the outstretched keeper, 3-1.

Wayne Whitlow, Highfield manager, was pleased with the performance.

“It was good to get back to winning ways, it’s been a poor October for us,” he said.

“It was a great victory and now we’ve got to look beyond, we should be getting our full squad back soon and nobody should beat us.”

Middleton Town clinched a 3-2 victory against Chadderton FC in the Sun Chemical Division One.

Town struggled in the opening 10 minutes of the game after going 1-0 down and unable to get a grip in midfield.

Middleton fell to a 2-0 deficit, but Jordan Burton pulled them back into the match before half time.

Not long after the break Middleton equalised through Burton’s second of the match.

With only a minute to go both sides battled for the winner, Middleton arguably looked the most likely.

Chadderton went close, but Jake Bestley got on the end of Burton’s cross to seal the game for Middleton Town.

Chris Petcu, Middleton Town manager said: “We’re unbeaten and have managed 52 goals in nine games.

“I’m very happy with the way we’re playing.”
