LIFE IN MY NORTHERN TOWN

-

SO that’s the end of a pretty momentous year for the people of Rochdale.

The centre of town is slowly changing beyond recognition – well it is to those over 65 and still recognise that this is earth they are living on.

Whether we like it or not, the centre of our town is taking on a new shape and a new dynamic.

New buildings are sprouting up everywhere, some good, some bad, and landmarks are disappearing left, right and centre.

Again, whether we like it or not, a new shopping centre is on its way to go alongside the two that we have already.

The bit that excites me personally is the addition of a new cinema.

Not because I like going to the cinema, which I do, but because there will finally be something to bring people into the centre of town at night.

Now we just need a music venue, some new restaurants and some other attractions to go alongside it.

If somebody could read this out to the planners, I would be most grateful.

With regards to last year, most of the news was dominated by our MP and the vast majority of it was not good.

And when even the drunks, beggars and layabouts around the town are embarrassed at their antics, you know it is time for him to go.

As for me, I have made a list of my New Year resolutions:

I will stop climbing into the new river opening.

I will take that library book back.

I will say nice things about the council and Our Beloved Leader.

I will use public transport more often – should it ever turn up.

I will be more positive about living in Rochdale.

Can’t see many of them lasting long but as they say, optimism’s fires burn eternal.

I will be out around town tonight doing my best to support local businesses by buying as many pints of beer as I can handle, which, if truth be told, is not that many these days.

All that is left now is for me to wish you all a Happy New Year and all the best for the coming 12 months.
