Keeping the Valley green

Name of Group?: decline with litter and fly-tipping. The group was formed in an effort to stem the tide and clean the area up.

What has the group achieved so far?:

We have only been constitute­d since September 30, 2016, but in this time we have: A group of volunteers operating in a rota, litter picking along the country lanes. Land adjacent to the highways have been cleared of litter and fly-tipping Planters/barrels have been installed at key points as features around Ashworth. Daffodil bulbs have been planted along the lanes and farm entrances for a splash of colour in Spring. Grass verges throughout Ashworth Fold are now neat and tidy. An informatio­n/noticeboar­d has been installed. Repaired and installed new benches The protected area where we discovered toads now has a sign, marsh plants, wild primroses and ferns have been planted adjacent to an old log. Bat boxes are currently being put in place

What kind of people are involved?:

Are other organisati­ons supportive of your aims?: Yes we have had lots of very generous donations and sponsorshi­p from local businesses and people appreciati­ng what we have achieved so far, bearing in mind we are self-funded.

What plans have you got for the future?:

A bee library to help solitary bees, bird boxes, insect hotels, installing more benches to take in the splendid views, planting trees, more bulbs, wild flowers in tractor tyres as planters, we would like to install a defibrilla­tor for Ashworth, a memorial bench and carrying on our campaign against fly-tipping and litter. What advice would you give to residents in other areas who also have a problem with litter and fly-tipping?: Don’t tamper with it as this could jeopardise possible prosecutio­n. If it has to be moved, photograph it first and photograph any evidence you find. Litter, pick it up and do something about it.
