Table-topping Colts tamed by Limeside

- BEN SIMMONDS

LIMESIDE King George toppled league leaders Middleton Colts 4-3 in the Newbold Tyres Premier Division.

The game started evenly with both teams having golden chances in the opening 20 minutes.

It was LKG opened the scoring after 25 minutes, when Dave Shaw got to the edge of the box before firing a shot into the bottom left hand corner.

Phil Davidson, the LKG keeper, made two good saves to keep the score at 1-0. However, Colts drew level two minutes before half time when a defensive mix-up allowed a Colts player to nip in and equalise.

LKG restored their lead on the stroke of half time when Lee Kelly fired home.

Limeside had to withstand pressure in the second half as Colts enjoyed the majority of possession, but continued to create chances.

The Limeside’s lead was increased when Jamie Royle was first to a loose ball to slot home. Ten minutes later LKG made it 4-1 with Royle’s second of the match.

Colts came back hard in the last 20 mins, getting one goal back and heaping pressure of LKG.

Their pressure paid off again as they made it 4-3 with two minutes to go, however they could not find the equaliser.

LKG manager Pete Hewitt said: “We knew what a great team Middleton Colts are, and if we didn’t match them in every position we would lose. That’s what we did we matched them and took our chances in great style.”

Broadway Celtic were unable to steal three points against Sportsman’s in a game which ended a 3-3 stalemate.

The Sun Chemical Division One side’s started evenly, but Broadway were clinical and as the half-time whistle approached were 2-0 up.

The goals came from Lee Galpin’s penalty and Dan Javed.

Sportsman hit back in the second half pulling back to 2-2 almost instantly.

Broadway managed to regroup and find their form, which in-turn found them the lead.

Dan Javed’s 80th minute strike led Broadway to believe they would finish the match ahead and claim all three points.

However, it was not to be – poor defending from a set piece saw Sportsman equalise in last minute.

Broadway manager Mark Heath said: “It was a good game for neutrals but felt like a loss to Broadway.”
