History in the making

LANCASHIRE Thunder will make history this summer as their mouth-watering opening match of the new Kia Super League will be televised live.

Thunder start the T20 campaign on August 11 with a clash against Roses rivals Yorkshire Diamonds at Headingley in a double-header which includes Lancashire Lightning’s NatWest T20 Blast showdown with Yorkshire Vikings. Both matches will be shown live on Sky.

Thunder then return to Emirates Old Trafford five days later to host Surrey Stars in another televised double-header, with Lightning taking on the Worcestershire Rapids in the NatWest T20 Blast.

Thunder’s second home game will be at Blackpool where they face Loughborough Lightning on Sunday, August 20, and they will play last year’s champions Southern Vipers at Liverpool three days later.

Thunder complete their campaign with a trip to The Brightside Ground, Bristol as they face last year’s runners up Western Storm on August 26, with Finals Day on September 1 at Hove.

“The Kia Super League was deemed a huge success last year and I’m very proud that Lancashire Thunder were at the heart of it,” said Lancashire chief executive Daniel Gidney.

Lancashire Thunder general manager Bobby Cross added: “This is another important step in the right direction for women’s cricket in this country.

“The competition was without doubt a success last year and the addition of live broadcasts through Sky Sports and BBC Radio will help grow the game to new audiences.

“We are currently in the process of finalising our squad ahead of the 2017 Kia Super League where we’re looking forward to announcing our new overseas signings in due course.”
