Double delight for sister Warriors

-

ROCHDALE Warriors karate club has had a busy start to the year as members train for their next competition as well as various black belt gradings.

They are looking to compete in the SKU National Championships in Sheffield in March.

And various members are set to take black belt or second dan gradings this year.

The club’s last medal success was for sisters Anna and Jennifer Forbes, who came away with four medals from the Shukokai Open Championships, also in Sheffield.

The teenagers took part in the competition at the English Institute for Sport (EIS).

Anna won a gold in kumite (fighting) and a silver in individual kata. And both girls got a silver in pairs kata together.

As Anna had turned 16 the week before the competition, the girls had to compete in the adult pairs section despite Jennifer being 13. And they managed to come second, narrowly missing out on the top spot to two very experienced karateka.

Rochdale Warriors’ Sensei Damien McLaughlin said: “The event drew competitors from as far away as Scotland with more than 300 players taking part, so the girls had to be on top of their game, which they were and they did Rochdale Warriors Karate club proud.”

Anyone interested in taking up the sport of Karate can visit the club’s website, www. rochdalewarriors.co.uk or contact Damien, the instructor, on 07504 858963.

Alternatively, they can go along to have a chat – the club trains twice a week, Tuesdays (8 to 9.30pm) and Saturdays (12 to 1.30pm).

The club is on Trafalgar Street, Rochdale, OL16 2DR.
