Workington succumb to Boro’s blitz
LITTLEBOROUGH RUFC put in one of their best performances of the season as they picked up a dominant one-sided victory against Workington.
The hosts picked up nearly a point per minute as they thrashed their opponents at Rakewood Road, even though head coach Richard Rawlinson was unable to attend.
Boro came flying out of the blocks and it didn’t take them long to make the breakthrough as Andy Bairstow crossed for his side’s opening try after just six minutes.
Moments later and Littleborough were in again when Richard Taylor was the man who got the next try.
Workington were struggling to cope with the constant pressure and Boro took full advantage when winger Nathan Coop went over to further increase his side’s lead.
While Littleborough were dominant with their tries, they were struggling with their kicking, as none of the conversions from their opening three tries were successful.
Boro remained dominant as the half progressed, and they were soon in again when David Kearns played in Taylor for his second try.
The home side finally managed to take full advantage of this try, as Chris Park kicked through the posts to successfully add the conversion.
Littleborough led 22-0 with only 22 minutes on the clock, but they didn’t take their foot off the gas at any point and continued to dictate proceedings.
Good work from Ben Irving allowed him to touch down for the fifth try of the afternoon, but once again there was no conversion.
With half an hour gone, Jack Whittles made a great break forward before finding Matthew Goldthorpe in space, who managed to cross for yet another try.
Park rediscovered his kicking accuracy for this attempt, adding the extras to increase his team’s lead.
It had been an extremely dominant first half performance from Boro, meaning they led 41-0 at the interval.
Littleborough made changes during the break, as Mark Murgatroyd and Paul Fino were replaced by Josh Ellidge and Cosmin Rosu.
The new players made an immediate impact, as they were involved in the move that saw Kearns break away and go over for yet another try, with Park adding the conversion.
Immediately after the match resumed, Boro won possession back once again and raced up the field, allowing Kearns to get another try in quick succession.
Park was making up for his earlier misses by kicking the conversion through the posts to add more points onto the already huge Boro total.
He was required again moments later when captain Andy Bairstow grabbed his second try of the afternoon, and Park slotted home to add the extras.
Workington ensured they would have something to cheer about when they got some points on the board in the second half, but Littleborough were soon in again when Goldthorpe got his second try of the afternoon, with Park converting.
The final try came with eight minutes remaining when Whittles touched down, before Park added the conversion again to put the finishing touches on a dominant 76-7 win.
It was an extremely impressive win for Boro, with all of the team putting in fantastic performances. The first team are due to have a rest next weekend, with no fixture planned.
