As workmanlike Hull claim victory

-

forwards Paul Brearley Callum Marriott and Seta Tala just falling short through some great Hull defence.

The half time whistle couldn’t come soon enough for the home side but it disrupted Mayfield’s momentum completely.

The restart saw Wests come back at Mayfield looking very dangerous, until Brearley brilliantly intercepted a long pass in his own half and was uncatchable as he sped over for a Zac Hartley converted try regaining the lead for the visitors, 8-10.

This could have been a decisive moment in the game as Mayfield started to play rugby, the game was very evenly balanced, until the linesman adjudged the Wests winger had touched down in the corner a fact that was hotly disputed by the Mayfield crowd in that corner who claimed Registe had made a great tackle and the ball had been grounded on him.

Strangely, the referee didn’t agree and it was 12 -10. This again disrupted the Mayfield pattern and the mistakes crept back in. Within five minutes a speculative high bomb was dropped and Wests pounced on the loose ball to forge further in front at 16-10.

A penalty for a swinging arm meant that at 18-10 Mayfield would have to score twice to get anything from the game, and with a defence as strong as West Hull’s this was always unlikely.

They kept on plugging away but showed none of the flair that this team are renowned for if they had they would have put this game to bed long before.

But with six minutes remaining a Brearley chip through was followed by the ever improving Kieran Harmer and he managed to cut the deficit with a well taken score, 18-14.

This was the last time the scorer was troubled and Wests took the two points, leaving Mayfield kicking themselves knowing if they had played to anything like their potential they could have taken the victory here. As it was they were they were bettered in most departments by a solid but somewhat ordinary Hull side.

Friday sees a cracking game at the Mayfield Sports Centre as reigning champions Siddal are the visitors in a NCL Premier division clash. This has all the makings of a classic as most games between these two teams have been over recent years. Siddal took the honours last year winning both the home and away games.

After the defeat at Hull, coaches Calland and Butterworth will be looking to shake things up a bit and will be welcoming Aidy Gleeson back to the squad after a lengthy injury lay off. Gleeson will add some steel to the go forward with his trademark blockbusting drives and hopefully will be the catalyst needed to reenergise the side.

Siddal put in a powerful performance last week as they demolished Skirlaugh in Halifax so Mayfield know they will have to be up to speed for this one.

There is no doubt that they have they have the skill and ability throughout the side and Calland and Butterworth will be hoping to fetch that to the fore on Friday.
