Golden school sports stars are game for medal success

ROCHDALE pupils were among the medals at the Greater Manchester Winter School Games.

Holy Trinity in Littleboro­ugh came joint first in the primary schools swimming gala and there was another gold in the pool when the Rochdale borough team took top spot in the disabled contest.

Mark Kenyon, head at Holy Trinity, whose boys team also took silver in the swimming gala, said: “This is such a fantastic achievemen­t for our small school.

“It highlights what can be achieved with eager children, supportive parents and an exciting vibrant sporting curriculum.”

More than 2,000 youngsters took part in the games, which took place at venues across Manchester and were opened by Littleboro­ugh’s Olympic ●●The girls’ and boys’ swim teams at Holy Trinty Primary School, who won medals at the Greater Manchester Winter Schools Games hockey gold medalist Nicola White.

She said: “It was brilliant to see such a huge turnout for the Greater Manchester School Games.

“It’s wonderful to see how opportunit­ies have evolved and expanded since I was young competing in the GM Youth Games. The School Games simulates a mini Olympics and gives the children an excellent opportunit­y to feel what it could be like to be an elite athlete in the future, the energy and excitement was fantastic and I do hope those taking part continue on their sporting journey.”
