Churches offer warm welcome to the needy
TWO Rochdale churches have joined together to provide friendship, hospitality and free brews.
St Chad’s and St George’s are taking part in Places of Welcome, is a nationwide scheme run by community groups who want to make sure that everyone who needs it has somewhere to go for a cup of tea and a conversation.
St Chad’s, in the town centre is not only an important historic building, but also on Thursdays from noon and 1pm visitors can gather together for lunch.
The Vicar of Rochdale the Rev Mark Coleman said: “It’s so simple, but so important. “We are very proud of our friendly lunch. Each week we have good conversations and offer a friendly listening ear.”
St George’s in Oakenrod opens its doors every Tuesday from 10.30am–11.30am for light refreshments.
The Rev Karen Smeeton said: “Isolation is a growing problem in society and St George’s and St Chad’s want to make sure that we are there for people who simply want to meet up with other people. We’re open to anyone of any faith or no faith.”
On March 9 Coun Janet Elmsley attended St Chad’s for lunch.
She spoke about the importance of well-being and good friendly relationships in the area.
And on Tuesday, March 28, the Mayor Ray Dutton will visit St George’s to formally to open their Places of Welcome scheme.
