●●10 years ago: FORTUNATE family struck lucky again in a competition organised by the Rochdale Exchange shopping centre.

On Good Friday and Easter Saturday, children were invited to join in and help make a giant Easter collage.

The best three collages won a giant Easter egg and Easter bunny.

And the first-prize winner was Fern Wason, who’s mum - by complete coincidence - won the Exchange’s Valentine’s day competition.

Back in February she was whisked away to the Whoop Hall Inn in Kirkby, Lonsdale, where she enjoyed a romantic weekend break.

In second place in the Easter collage competition was Chloe Waddington from Bacup and in third place was a visitor to Rochdale - Shazeen from

MEMBERS of Dearnley Spiritualist Church, Littleborough, handed over toys and money to Bridgefold Lodge children’s home.

The New Road church had been holding a series of spiritualism evenings which raised more than £600 for the Spotland Bridge home.

Church spokesman David Golden said: “It is a fantastic amount of money. It has put a smile on the kids’ faces and put a smile on my face as well.

“That is what spiritualism is all about”. MORE than £200 was raised for Springhill Hospice by a charity night at Miah’s Indian restaurant.

Manager Arus Miah arranged the night, where guests were invited to dine at the restaurant.

At the end of the evening the family-run business was delighted to hand over half the night’s takings to the hospice.

Arus said: “Everyone was really supportive and it was nice when everyone turned up on the night.

“It was so successful we might even do another one.” KARATE car washers made the first step in raising money for the Edinburgh Moon Walk.

The group of nine, who met at karate classes, managed to raise £150.

It was the first of five car washes, which the team hoped would raise them enough money for the Moon Walk charity event in support of Breast Cancer Research.

Helen O’Donnell said: “It felt busy because there weren’t as many of us, but we had a good time and the sun was shining.

“Hopefully, the customers we had will come back and new ones will arrive.” YOUNG cyclists were using pedal power in a bid to keep fit and healthy.

As part of a ‘travel plan’ at Caldershaw Primary School, 30 pupils from Year 5 got on their bikes with instructors from BikeRight! cycle training centre.

Youngsters were taking in their own bikes and helmets for a cycling proficiency course.

They were be trained in basic knowledge about handling a bicycle and staying safe on the road.

At the end of the course the group of nine and 10-year-olds were presented with cycle proficiency certificates.

Headteacher Lesley Isherwood said: “We want to encourage them to be fit and healthy.” NORA Durham, president of the Littleborough Royal National Lifeboat Institution, welcomed a new member into the fold.

Kathleen Hill was presented with a badge at an afternoon tea which raised £600.

Secretary Margaret Smith said the group was now looking to enlist more new blood.

She said: “New members are a rare breed indeed.

“I think Kathleen is the first one since I joined about eight years ago but we would love to attract some more.

“It is not a very onerous task and it is for a very good cause”.
