Angels hit road to help friend’s cancer battle
AGROUP of 20 friends are running a relay race to raise cash for the charity that has helped their pal who is fighting cancer?
Jen Walters and Emma Rudkowskyj, both from Norden, have organised the event in aid of cancer charity Maggies in honour of their friend Charley Steel, who is undergoing treatment for cancer at a hospital in Newcastle.
Charley, 29, who is originally from Norden but moved to the Lake District to be a sailing instructor, was diagnosed with a tumour in her liver in January this year. It was removed, but the cancer was very aggressive and last month doctors discovered it had spread to her blood and spine.
On June 10, Jen, Emma and their friends will be running a relay around Norden and Bamford, dressed up as Charley’s Angels, and holding a banner with the legend #madeofsteel.
They will end up at the Norden Arms where a fundraising event will be held with a barbecue and raffle.
Jen, 36, who works as a head of HR, said: “Two or three of us will be running each kilometre before passing the baton on to the next lot. We thought it would be best to split it up as none of us are distance runners, but we will be doing it dressed up as angels.
“Maggies have been amazing for Charley and her family – they have looked after her so well.
“We wanted to do something so we could feel like we are helping. We can’t help Charley get better but we can raise money for Maggies.
“The Norden Arms have been really great, and we have had lots of prizes donated for the raffle.”

Charley has also started a blog, which Jen says has been therapeutic for her while she has been in hospital, and has also helped others in a similar position. It currently has over 8,000 views and 1150 followers.
