Latest toy craze has shopkeeper in a spin

-

IT’S the latest toy craze sweeping the nation.

Chances are you’ll have seen kids playing with a fidget spinner or a cube.

They come in a range of shapes and colours and are said to be useful for relieving stress and anxiety.

One Rochdale shopkeeper has told how he is selling hundreds of the gadgets every day.

Mohammed Yousaf, owner of the Auto Shop on Milkstone Road, says he has sold more than 2,000 of the toys this week alone and is struggling to keep up with demand.

Speaking on Thursday he told the Observer: “In more than 30 years of being in business I have never seen anything like this. It’s unbelievable.

“I have had to get in two new members of staff just to cope with demand.

“As soon as we get them they are being sold.

“We sold 660 yesterday, and we’ve ordered in another 1,600.”

One of the most popular of the toys is the fidget spinner, which users spin rapidly between their fingers.

The fun and addictive gadgets can help people focus on daily tasks and have more recently been used to help children with additional needs such as ADHD or ASD.

Their growing popularity is no doubt down to their small size - easily fitting into people’s pockets - and the fact they cost just a few pounds each.

Mohammed added: “The demand for them is incredible. I haven’t even got time to eat my lunch because every minute of the day we have someone in the shop asking for them.

“Every day is like Black Friday.”
