Fire crews keep moorland blaze away from farms
FIREFIGHTERS battled to stop a moorland blaze spreading to three farms.
The wild fire broke out on the hills above Littleborough on Saturday night.
Crews, who were called to Blackstone Edge at about 8.30pm, used specialist devices similar to leaf blowers to bring the blaze under control.
At their height flames were just 160ft from one farm.
Station manager Alan Ashworth said moorland blazes can be ‘devastating’ for the environment.
He added: “We have dealt with a few incidents in this area now.
“Wildfires can be devastating to the environment and if people are heading out on to the moors please take extra care.
“Make sure you put out any cigarettes and don’t light any fires. It’s also important to remember to take all your rubbish with you. It can take a long time for moorlands to recover from a fire and it can have a huge impact on habitats and wildlife.”
