Raiders to test holders’ resolve
MAYFIED begin their defence of the Conference Challenge Cup this afternoon hoping to improve on what was a disappointing performance at home last week against league leaders Thatto Heath.
Coaches Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth have had their work cut out and have lots to work on as they prepare the side for what could be a tricky game.
Their opponents this afternoon are Oulton Raiders from Leeds.
Oulton have an outstanding pedigree and having had some tough times over the past couple of seasons they are regaining a bit of their old form.
Although playing in the second division they have put together some good results and are currently in third place looking toward promotion at the end of the season.
Mayfield have, by their standards, had an ordinary start to the 2017 campaign, winning three from their six starts, and will be looking to today’s game as an opportunity to really get the season underway.
That said, the coaches are adamant that it is the performance that counts today rather than the result. They want to win this game but they want to win it in style, recreating some of the fantastic rugby they played season.
Mayfield will be boosted by the return of Callum Marriott who has been sidelined recently. Also pushing for a return are Lee Registe and Munya Samanyanga who have both looked good in training. last
