Stag trip dad died after being knocked down
AYOUNG dad died after being knocked down during a stag do in Budapest.
Sam Clancy, 24, from Littleborough, disappeared just hours after arriving in the Hungarian capital last Friday, having become separated from his pals on a night out.
As the Observer reported on Wednesday his friends and family had launched a desperate search for him in the city and a social media appeal for information was shared hundreds of times.
But on Tuesday a Foreign Office spokesman confirmed Sam had died.
Hungarian media has since reported he was hit by a car and killed.
He is believed to have been knocked down while crossing the busy Váci Road, in the Újpest district on the left bank of the Danube River on Friday.
The former St Cuthbert’s High School pupil has a two-year-old daughter.
Sam was one of a 22-strong group who flew out for the celebrations.
Witnesses say he was last seen getting into a taxi near a bar and nightclub complex called Morrisons 2 on Szent István Boulevard in District 6 of the city, shortly before 10.20pm local time on Friday.
Sam’s dad, Carl, and fiancée, Rebecca, flew out to Budapest to join the search.
On Monday, Sam’s brother Matthew said the family were ‘losing their minds’ with worry.
He told the Observer: “This is completely out of character.
“He would never leave it this long to get in touch unless something was wrong, so we’re all worried sick.
“My mum is losing her mind.
“We’re doing everything we can.
“We’re trying to get hold of CCTV so we can trace the taxi and things like that.”
A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Budapest. We are in contact with the Hungarian police and hospital services.”
