ADEVASTATED nurse who resorted to sleeping in her car after her house keys were stolen in Rochdale has been banned from the roads after being caught drink driving.

A court heard that Rebecca Scott, 25, was trying to move her car from outside her home onto a quieter side street just 100m away, when she narrowly avoided hitting a passing police car and drove into a wall.

The mental health nurse had been out celebrating her sister’s birthday in the hours leading up to the incident, when her handbag was stolen from inside a Rochdale bar.

It was later found in the gent’s toilets with her phone and house keys missing, but a spare car key was left inside.

After taking a taxi back to her home on Pilsworth Road, Heywood, she tried in vain to wake her family up so she could get inside, before eventually resorting to sleeping in her Vauxhall Corsa.

But when she attempted to move it just 100m around the corner onto the quieter Seymour Street, she almost hit a passing police car, which had to brake sharply to avoid hitting her, before running the car into a wall.

She was arrested and found to be more than twice the legal limit.

A visibly upset Miss Scott pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol at Manchester Magistrates Court.

The court heard that the 25-year-old, who had never been in trouble with the police before, was extremely remorseful and fully cooperated with officers after being arrested in the early hours of Sunday, April 23.

Defending, Peter Grogan told the court that Miss Scott was concerned about sleeping on a busy main road and only tried to move her car onto the side road because it was quieter.

He said: “It was a busy road and she didn’t feel comfortable sleeping there. She moved it 100 metres to Seymour Road where she collided with a wall.”

He added that Miss Scott is a mental health nurse who works up to 50 hours a week, was of previous good character and had no previous convictions.

Sentencing, magistrates told Miss Scott that they could see she was remorseful and fined her £380 - which would have been £570 had she not pleaded guilty.

She was banned from driving for 17 months.

She was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a victim surcharge of £38.

She was offered the option to take a drink driver awareness course to reduce the ban by 17 weeks if completed.
