We aim to help kids improve their health
Name of club: there were a high number of young people and children who showed an interest, so a group of us got together and formed the club, with local volunteers on the management committee and myself as the coach. Since then we have grown in popularity and outgrew the first venue, which we shared with Rochdale Karate Club. We moved into a new bigger unit on Mere Lane in Rochdale in 2015 and we now have over 60 regular participants of all ages and backgrounds. Our primary aim is to improve young people’s health and keep them positively engaged through the sport of boxing, but with affiliation to England Boxing, we plan to coach and develop future world boxing champions.
What kinds of people are involved?:
The boxing club is very popular and boasts a large membership and regular users, with both the junior and adult sessions being filled with both people from the local community and town, as well as people coming from the Greater Manchester area. Its exciting news for us that we are now ABA affiliated, it is great news for everybody connected with the club and deserved reward for all our coaches and volunteers. We have a very diverse group of people who come for the fun and high energy environment to keep fit and we have people who are serious about taking up boxing to a higher level and, now that we are affiliated, it will help us fulfil their ambitions and, who knows, we may well have a future world boxing champion right here at our club! What does ABA affiliated mean?: England Boxing, known until 2013 as the Amateur Boxing Association of England, is the governing body of amateur boxing clubs in England. It takes responsibility for managing and developing services for the sport, organising national competitions and selecting teams to box internationally. It also provides support and guidance for clubs at a local level. By being affiliated to England Boxing, Impact Boxing club will be able to enter competitions, train and qualify coaches and officials and be part of the ‘bigger picture’ of boxing. This will allow us give our advanced boxers the opportunity to enter competition and pursue boxing not just as a hobby but as a career.
