Easy riders hit £2,500 jackpot for charity

-

●●10 years ago: HARDY pair of cyclists made it back from an epic Land’s End to John O’Groats ride - and raised £2,500 for charity.

Lee Adams and Ian Denham, both from Shawclough, set off on Monday, June 4, 2007 .

Altogether, the pair, project managers for Cooperative Financial Services in Manchester, cycled 882 miles and were pedalling for about 57 hours.

Lee said: “It went very well.

“I really enjoyed it and it was actually easier than I thought it would be.”

Each day they would cycle an average of 90 miles, reaching speeds of up to 43 miles per hour.

But they claim they only really got tired by the last

A15 miles.

They were also lucky with the weather as it was good for almost the full trip, until they hit the Scottish highlands. A YOUNG lad from Crompton House School waltzed off with a major dancing award - for the forth year in a row.

Twelve-year-old Jacob Price, from Newhey, was North West champion modern sequence dancer in the competition held at Wythenshaw Forum.

Partnered by Lisa Kenyon, Jacob also picked up a title in the old time section.

Jacob, who attended Trujons School of Dancing in Royton, also won the North West title in the Latin American category.

His mum Elsie said: “Jacob is a multi-talented boy.

“He does ju-jitsu and wants to join the Royal Marines when he grows up.” A LITTLEBOROUGH man put his best foot forward to raise more than £430 for charity.

David Hawkins, of Hugh Street, took part in two sponsored walks in aid of Accrington-based Maundy Relief, which offered counselling and assistance to those in need.

He tackled the Littleborough boundary walk and the Accrington-toBurnley canal walk and urged others to get involved with the charity.

He said, “If everyone did just a little bit to help those less fortunate than ourselves the world would be a lot fairer place.

“Maundy Relief exists for anyone regardless of ages, race, religion or class.

It helps some of the most vulnerable people in society when they have nowhere else to turn.” PARISHIONERS of St Thomas’s Church held their most successful cheese and wine evening yet.

The home of Mike and Ann Worthington in Pennine Drive was packed with 60 people and raised £300.

As well as the cheese and wine there were stalls selling bric-a-brac, cakes and items for gardening.

So many people turned up for the event that they spilled out into the conservatory and the garden. A REUNION of 14 former pupils of Rochdale Grammar School for Girls took place at Eaves Hall Hotel, Clitheroe.

All the former pupils had all begun at the school aged 11.

The meeting was organised by three old girls who were now living in the Clitheroe area - Ruth Shackleton, Joan Miles and Marilyn Hopkinson to coincide with a visit from two friends who were living in Australia, Maureen Leech and Gwyneth Latchem. PROMISING young cooks at Brownhill school were able to flaunt their raw talent in a new food technology room, opened by local chef Andrew Nutter.

Andrew, of Nutters restaurant in Edenfield Road, cut the ribbon of the new room and stayed to chat with students about the new facility.

Karen Bracken, school business manager, said: “Andrew was fantastic with the students. I was overwhelmed.

“This is such an exciting time for Brownhill, we can offer our students the very best we can in food technology.

“The students are looking forward to using the new facility for gaining lots of different qualifications in food and hygiene.”

Following the lead of professionals Andrew Nutter and Carl Tait, also from Nutters, students took part in a demonstration and made chocolate medals in the new kitchen.
