Carnival pulls in the crowds
THOUSANDS of people lined the streets for this year’s Milnrow and Newhey Carnival.
Milnrow Brass Band led the parade last Saturday followed by a host of walking groups and floats.
Carnival Queens, looka-likes of Captain Jack Sparrow and Mr Gibbs from Pirates of the Caribbean, princesses and pirates, fairytale characters, steel bands, street dancers, morris dancers, cricketers, footballers, local businesses and charities all took part.
To the crowd’s delight, a fleet of F1 BriSCA stock cars took up the rear of the parade along with military vehicles and a tank.
One of the floats was arranged by members of the Carnival Committee and displayed names of all the businesses and groups who have supported the event.
Milnrow Pre-School Playgroup also celebrated the 50th anniversary of its launch during the parade.
Staff and youngsters sang Happy Birthday whilst walking in the procession and before having a celebratory tea party. All proceeds from the street collection were donated to Springhill Hospice.
Rochdale Exotics and Movie Animals UK brought along animals for people to see.
Paul Kettle, Chairman of the carnival, said: “We are proud to raise valuable funds for such a fantastic charity which touches the lives of so many in our local community.” Large crowds attended the fete in Milnrow Memorial Park after the procession and enjoyed the live music provided by Soul City Sounds. Loud Studios and K Stars Morris Troupe.
There was also a family fun fair, a display of vintage stock cars, paintball, crazy golf, toy stalls, craft stalls, health and beauty stalls, face painting, hair accessories, karate displays, handbag stalls, charity stalls and tombolas.
Next year will see the carnival celebrate its 50th anniversary on Saturday, June 23.
