Teenagers didn’t miss a day of school
TWO teenagers have made it all the way through high school without ever having a day off.
Daniel Vere from Rochdale and Jake Gavin from Middleton are both finishing high school with perfect attendance records after five years at St Anne’s Academy in Middleton.
It means they have been present in school for almost 1,000 days of lessons without fail.
Daniel’s twin brother Matthew also very nearly achieved the same feat.
He was sent home for two and a half days to recuperate after coming into school sick in year seven - but sibling rivalry meant he went on to make it in every day for the next four years.
Now the boys have been presented with a £200 gift for their dedication to their studies.
A school spokeswoman said: “Imagine starting as a starry-eyed Year 7 with high hopes and good intentions.
“Imagine completing the first one hundred and ninety days at secondary school with not a single absence and then imagine completing one hundred percent attendance four more times. These boys are not to be sneezed at and they did not allow sniffles to deter them.
“We, at St Anne’s Academy, are really proud of these three young men who have already shown true grit in their approach to life and education.”
Jake’s mum Cheryl said even when he was poorly, he was determined to make it in to school.
She says Jake told her that he reasoned that he wouldn’t be able to take time off when he started working - and decided to take the same attitude to going to school.
She says Jake is now looking forward to starting an accountancy apprenticeship with a firm in Manchester.
She said: “My dad and I and his whole family are so proud of him.
“He’s been really ill and still went in to school.
“He said to me ‘I’ll have to do it when I go to work, so I should do it for school too.’”
