Funtime for families and four-legged pals

FAMILIES - and their pets - came out in force for Whitworth’s annual fun day and dog show.

Attraction­s on the Riverside car park included funfair rides and games, ice cream and candy floss.

There were 10 dog show categories with prizes for the scruffiest mutt, waggiest tail, best fancy dress, best biscuit catcher, best rescue dog and more, judged by representa­tives from the RSPCA, Rossendale Responsibl­e Animal Rescue and the town council.

Prizes were presented by the Mayor of Whitworth, Coun Alan Neal.

The best in show prize was awarded to Zara Leech, seven, and her one-year-old Pomeranian teacup called Ted.

Ted and Zara earned their place after winning the fancy dress category dressed as Woody and Jessie from Toy Story.

Samba Dance and Fitness provided fantastic entertainm­ent by their different dance teams and Rossendale Responsibl­e Animal Rescue provided a free micro-chipping service. RRG Toyota Rochdale supported the event by supplying a car filled with balloons and the community guessed the number of balloons, the winner was Carole Pennington who won a £150 Amazon voucher with her guess of 200 balloons.

The Spodden Valley Explorers attended to promote the Spodden Valley Revealed project and offered free family badge making. They also had an archaeolog­ical expert on hand to identify visitors’ finds.

Coun David Chorlton, chair of organisers Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee, says: “We had a great day and thanks are offered to everyone who came along and joined in the fun, and to everyone involved in the event’s organisati­on. Roll on 2018.”
