Caring Amy earns top guiding honour
A GIRL guide has been recognised for her commitment to helping those less fortunate.
Amy Whittle, a member of 6th Rochdale Guide Unit, has been awarded Girlguiding North West England’s new President’s Award, which recognises young members who have gone above and beyond to help others.
In December last year, Amy took to the streets of Manchester to handdeliver gifts to twenty homeless people.
Amy, who was aged 10 at the time, decided to create gifts for those less fortunate who had found themselves sleeping rough around the Christmas period.
With help from her friends and family, Amy collected lots of different practical items such as clothing and sanitary items, to support those in need. These were then made into 20 separate gift parcels, which Amy hand delivered to homeless people on the streets of Manchester.
Amy, aged 11, said: “Receiving the President’s Award was very unexpected and I feel proud of my achievement. I hope it encourages others to make an extra step to help other people.”
Cat Holt, who is the Leader of 6th Rochdale Guides, said: “We’re all very proud of Amy for using her own initiative to help others. She’s an amazing girl and we hope others will follow in her footsteps.”
Amy is one of the first recipients of the President’s Award which recognises young members who have shown great initiative and determination.
