Mayfield move up to third in Conference

ROCHDALE Mayfield moved up to third place in the Kingstone Press NCL Premier Division after a hard fought victory in this encounter which saw all the points scored in the first half.

Wath Brow moved into an early lead when their forward Molyneaux crashed over for a converted try followed by a quick penalty goal from Brow’s Man of the Match Colton-Watson giving the visitors an 0-8 lead.

However, Mayfield’s youthful side showed their quality, determinat­ion and pure speed when centre Matty Ashton intercepte­d a pass on his own 10 metre line and raced pretty much unopposed to score a length of the field try which Lewis Sheridan converted making it 6-8.

Mayfield seemed to have the bulk of the possession which resulted in evergreen Wayne English power over in the corner to give field a 10-8 lead English has settled in really well to this side and is playing some great rugby.

Half time was approachin­g when some skilful approach work by Luke Fowden released the backs on the left fringes to put terrier Jack Sampson over in the corner with the resultant conversion kicked by Lewis Sheridan sending Mayfield to the shed’s 16-8 up.

The second half saw the home side pretty much camped in the Wath Brow half but just couldn’t seem to throw that final killer pass to cross the white wash and the game ended with victory for Rochdale Mayfield by 16-8.
