Mayfield make plans for tester

-

AS sports go it doesn’t get any tougher than rugby league. As games go it doesn’t get any tougher than playing the top team on their own ground.

Well that’s what Mayfield do today (Sat) when they cross the Pennines and what a game it promises to be. Siddal are top having lost only two games and drawn one all season, they are a real class outfit.

Mayfield have climbed to third with an impressive run of form.

They travel to Yorkshire today not underestimating the size of the obstacle in front of them but relishing the challenge.

In the reverse fixture earlier in the season Mayfield produced some great rugby and were unlucky to come away with only one point.

Today will be a different game on the Siddal ground but Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth are hoping they have done enough in training.

To come out of this game with anything Mayfield must be disciplined, respect possession and stick to the game plan.

Lost ball and cheap penalties have cost them dearly in some games and they can’t afford to do this against today’s opposition. Not wishing to dwell on the fact Butterworth said: “We have a few players out this afternoon and that will obviously influence out team selection.

“But in new signings Luke Fowden and Jack Francis we have two quality forwards who are used to and indeed thrive on the big games.

“This will help the youngsters in the team enormously and hopefully today will show the strength in depth we currently have in the squad.”

For the first time in a number of years Mayfield now have a big pack boasting strength and mobility right through, coupling these forwards with one of the best and certainly the youngest set of backs in the division will see Mayfield reap the benefits.
