Good show as Boro get set for start

-

LITTLEBOROUGH RUFC gave a good account of themselves but ultimately came up short 31-17 in their pre-season friendly match after they were beaten at Sale RUFC.

They played three 30 minute sessions and during the first session Boro fielded their most senior players.

They put in a good performance, restricting the opposition to their own half for all but the last couple of minutes.

Constant pressure from Boro eventually resulted in Jack Whittles crossing the line for the game’s first try after 15 minutes, then almost immediately the home side worked their way into Boro’s half for the first time and obtained a converted try to edge the lead.

For Boro, captain Andrew Walton was in form along with Matthew Goldthorpe, George Roberts and vice-captain Chris Park, with great support from the rest of the team.

In the second passage of play, there was a completely different Boro team full of last season’s senior colts who are now eligible for senior rugby.

They played well, indicating that future senior rugby at Boro is in capable hands. It was also great to see Richard Taylor come on as scrum half along with long service player Brook Reader who was very active.

Unfortunately the host side obtained three tries and one conversion during this period in the 44th, 47th and 55th minute of play.

In the third and final passage of play, Boro made more player changes such as Michael Fletcher and

Ben Irving coming on, and they were the only side to score during this period with a try from Brook Reader in the 68th minute followed by a try from Ian Murgatroyd, converted by Chris Park in the 70th minute.

Despite the loss, it was a more than satisfactory night for Boro, and the coaching staff will now be eagerly anticipating the beginning of the new season.
