Festival made us envy of neighbours

-

I LOOK forward to the day when I feel more proud of Rochdale and our council than I do right now. I doubt it’ll happen though.

I’ve talked about it before, but the recent feel good festival, put a massive smile on my face as well as on others.

The number of times I’ve been told how lucky we are to have a local authority that’s determined to continue with such important events when others are cancelling them to make savings.

The positive coverage the council gets in the local media is also viewed enviously.

Obviously the continued squeeze on local finances means such decisions are inevitable.

But I applaud our council for carrying on with the event ( in fact it goes from strength to strength) when they so easily could have stopped it!

With the amazing local media coverage/ support the festival gets how can it fail?!

We are the envy of many of our neighbours. BH Thornley Kingsway

DAD SERVED TIME ON ‘TUBS’

THE ‘Rochdale System’ for the disposal of what was politely called ‘night spoil’ continued until well into the 20th century (Observer 16 August).

My dad worked for Rochdale Corporation in the 1940s and early 50s and served his time on the ‘tubs’ before graduating to being a road sweeper.

By this time the bucket had been replaced by a large half barrel, the ‘tub’, which was collected at intervals by a covered lorry and replaced with clean one.

The service covered houses in outlying areas which I think included Broad Lane. He even taught me a little ditty which it would not be appropriate to repeat here. Les May Crescent Road
