Azeem is on the ball for talent scheme
A BLIND athlete has won a scholarship after getting top marks in his A levels.
Azeem Amir, from Rochdale Sixth Form College, who is registered blind, was selected to be part of the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS).
Azeem, who was predicted C grades, achieved 2A*s and a B in law, economics and psychology.
TASS, funded by Sport England works with educational institutions and governing bodies of sport to support talented athletes.
Azeem who plays blind football for Merseyside FC was selected for the scholarship by the FA, who chose 10 footballers nationally.
Azeem will be training at Manchester Metropolitan University whilst studying business management with sports studies at the University of Salford.
The Rochdale student who is aiming to represent the country in football by 2018 and then go on to play in the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020 said: “It is a big honour to be chosen as part of 10 footballers out of the UK.
“My degree is four years and my scholarship is one year and hopefully that will push me onto the England squad, as where I train provides state of the art facilities.
“I was over the moon to receive the scholarship and combined with my results which were completely unexpected it was a great day.”
