NEARLY 100,000 young people in the region can now get half-price bus tickets.

Anyone aged between 16 and 18 and lives or studies in Greater Manchester can get 50 percent off a day’s unlimited travel on any bus in the ten boroughs.

The new deal with the region’s bus operators was first announced in June by Mayor Andy Burnham, who had promised free travel for young people in his manifesto.

All you need to do is get an Anybus 1-Day Travelcard, which are available from all bus drivers.

The scheme is being run by Greater Manchester Travelcards Ltd, which represents all the bus companies.

Mr Burnham said: “One of my key manifesto pledges was to provide free travel to our city region’s young people.

“The launch of this product signifies a major step towards realising this ambition so I’m absolutely delighted that it is now available.

“Whether for school, college or training or to spend time with family and friends, it’s now easier – and cheaper – for those aged between 16 and 18, to get around.”

He said by reducing bus travel costs they were enabling young people to more easily access work, training, education, skills - and leisure.

Trevor Roberts, Chair of GMTL, the industry body which manages multi-operator and multi-modal ticketing in Greater Manchester, said they had worked hard with industry partners to make the product available with the hope it will encourage young people to use public transport.

Pass holders will be able to travel half-price up until the August 31 following their 18th birthday.

TfGM will continue to offer a 50 per cent discount on fares for children aged 16 and under.

Mr Burnham announced the new deal at Manchester College, where students welcomed the news.

Level 3 Business student Lewis Blackburn, 17, makes the six-mile journey from Stalybridge to Openshaw four days a week with Stagecoach, and pays full price for his journey.

Lewis said: “The idea of reducing the cost for young students like myself is a big deal.

“Speaking personally, this is life-changing, because the money it currently costs could be put towards something else instead.”

Those eligible are encouraged to sign up for their 16-18 smart card so that they can get on board.

You will first need a 16-18 get me there smart card, which can be ordered online at www. getmethere.com<http:// www.getmethere.com/>.
