SIR Michael Parkinson has been forced to cancel a planned appearance at a literature festival while he recovers from surgery.

The chat show legend was due to appear at Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival next month, alongside the likes of Terry Waite.

But he has been advised by his doctors to take time to recuperate after having a minor operation on his back.

His agent released a statement, which said: “Though unexpected, this was a routine and successful operation.

“Healing time for the procedure usually takes around six to eight weeks to make a full recovery, so as advised by his doctors, Sir Michael will be taking this time to recuperate.

“In light of this, Sir Michael will be altering his schedule accordingly, meaning that unfortunately he won’t be able to attend the Rochdale festival this year.”

Sir Michael was due to talk about his incredible 50 year career in journalism, radio and television broadcasting which has seen him interview more than 2,000 of the most important cultural figures of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The legendary broad- caster says he plans to appear at the festival next year instead.

He said: “I’m sorry to disappoint and apologies for the late notice but sadly it was unavoidable.

“I hope to be back to my best soon and I look forward to performing in Rochdale next year.”

Ticket holders who booked online will automatically receive a refund, whilst those who booked in person are asked to visit Touchstones Rochdale from 13 September with their tickets for a refund.

The festival meanwhile, which has been organised by the council, will feature almost 40 events in 13 venues around the town, from Tuesday, October 17 to Monday, October 23.

The line-up includes writer and comedian Jenny Eclair, former Home Secretary Alan Johnson, Manchester poet Tony Walsh, former hostage and peace envoy Terry Waite CBE, plus bestselling crime writer Mandasue Heller and many more.

The events include drama, comedy, poetry, spoken word, visual arts and children’s shows.

There will also be ‘Generation Z’ events for 14 to 25 year olds.
