Delight as baths reopen doors
CASTLETON baths reopened its doors on Monday
The historic pool, which first opened in 1910, has been shut since traces of Legionella were found in the showers in December.
And with refurbishment and repair costs estimated at £120,000 the pool, which is where Olympic star Keri-Anne Payne learnt the ropes, was at risk of being closed permanently.
But Castleton-raised businessman Nick Crewe – who runs engineering and construction firm Crewe Industrial – stepped in and set up a trust which has taken over the lease from Link4Life under a community asset transfer.
And after weeks of work it finally reopened on Monday
Castleton Councillor Billy Sheerin, who worked alongside Councillors Aasim Rashid and Jean Hornby to help save the baths, said: “It’s just wonderful for the local community and a real boost for Castleton.
“I can’t thank Nick enough for his time, energy and investment in the project.
“He has ensured the pool can be enjoyed by generations to come. I am absolutely thrilled.”
Mr Crewe said: “I simply couldn’t let this famous old pool, at the heart of the Castleton community for 100 years, close to the public.
“The pool is a fantastic facility which is going to be even better when the refurbishments are finished.
“This is a real tonic for people of all ages in Castleton and beyond.
“Thanks to everyone who has helped to make my vision a reality.” ●●Taking a look inside Castleton pool are, from left, Gary Ellis, of Crewe Industrial; Joanne Potts, pool manager; Coun Richard Farnell, council leader and councillors Billy Sheerin; Jean Hornby and Aasim Rashid
