DOZENS of cars has been ‘keyed’ in a mindless spate of vandalism.

Up to 60 cars are thought to have been scratched in Whitworth.

It’s feared the total repair bill could run into tens of thousands of pounds.

Cars parked along Market Street and surrounding roads were targeted in the spree.

Police are investigating and have appealed for CCTV footage of the attacks.

Lynn Crook’s Honda Jazz and her husband’s Kia Ceed were among the vehicles targeted. Four of her neighbours’ cars were also damaged.

The former prison officer, 62, said: “We cannot afford to get them resprayed - it’s not a priority.

“My car’s old and probably only worth £500, but it will probably cost at least that to get it fixed

“I was due to exchange it on Saturday, but that’s probably gone out of the window now.

“The person who did it will probably say ‘Oh, you’re insured’, but we still have to pay the excess and then everybody’s insurance in the area goes up. It’s really, really annoying.”

On Thursday afternoon at least a dozen cars on Market Street could be seen with deep scratches along the doors and bonnets.

Residents say police have been conducting door-to-door enquiries.

Robert Bradbury is facing a £1,200 repair bill after his Jaguar estate was extensively scratched as it was parked outside his home on Market Street. He said: “It has been keyed all down the passenger side and all over the bonnet.

“It will need a full respray which could cost up to £1,200.

“I am not calm about it, but there is no point being agitated, the main thing is whoever did it is caught.”

Another couple, whose Mercedes and BMW cars were vandalised outside their terraced home, described the attacks as ‘mindless’.

In a statement Rossendale Police said: “Between the hours of around 9pm on Monday, September 25, and 8am on Tuesday, September 26, dozens of vehicle were damaged along Market Street, Broadley, Whitworth close to the Rochdale boundary.

“The vehicles have been ‘keyed’ causing deep scratches and costly repairs for many victims.

“We have been conducting enquires with victims, neighbours and looking at CCTV opportunities.

“We are appealing for information to identify the offenders and asking residents to check their CCTV to see if it captures who is responsible.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting reference number LC-201709280252, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
