Boro’s crop of talent is bearing fruit

-

LITTLEBOROUGH Boxing clubs Harvey Ashworth and Joe Vaughan came away with North West Boxing titles on Sunday 3rd of October at Club 147 in Walkden, Manchester.

Harvey Ashworth of Littleborough was already through.

However, Joe had to box Dorian Kaminski from Olivers in Salford for the second time in a year to win the North West title and the second fight showed just how much both fighters had improved.

In what was a non stop bout between the pair, Kaminski from Salford had greatly improved since the pair’s first bout and he came out strong, looking to take control of the bout from the off.

However, Vaughan put on a great display of boxing to take the title for the second time from Kaminski and now both Littleborough lads go on to compete for the national title in the coming weeks.

Also fighting for the title was Alex Young in what was mixed feelings for the Littleborough fighter.

The week before, Alex fought an excellent fight against Curtis Magee of Clayton in what showed every aspect of the sport in one bout, inside boxing and angles were displayed by both boxers and Young of Littleborough came out on top of that encounter – but in doing so he picked up an injury that he took into the final.

Boxing through the injury, Young gave an excellent account of himself.

Having to box without full use of his footwork he was still able to walk his opponent backwards and stay competitive throughout the fight, really only being beaten by lack of landed shots instead of the quality landed.

Littleborough’s head coach Mark Oldham said: “Last year I said we have lads that started boxing with us a few years ago that are going to come good soon and with this great set of lads that’s what we are seeing happen.

“It’s exciting for the club and these boxers are now of a good age.”

“If they carry on working as they do I’m positive you’re going to hear about them a lot more,” coach Jeff Leach added.

“The aim is now to chase the national title, making boxers that came in not knowing how to throw a punch into champions is a very rewarding feeling, to see how much they have improved satisfies all the hard work we put in as a club”
