We must put brake on danger driving
I AM enraged by daily occurrences of dangerous driving and the reluctance of our council to do anything about it.
There is no easy solution to the excessive speed and the dangerous use of vehicles on our roads but it is time our Council did something about it.
At the Littleborough PACT meeting I asked for a single point of contact for reporting incidents, using a taxi driver as an example illustrates the current level of confusion, should people report incidents to Licensing, Highways or the Police.
Highways were nominated and I reported two incidents of dangerous driving to them, their reply suggested I report them to the police at the next PACT meeting.
If this wasn’t such a serious issue the response would be laughable.
Coun Dearnley raised this at the full Council meeting only for Cllr Emmott to suggest systems were in place and no intervention was necessary.
Well Cllr Emmett, systems are clearly not in place and if they are, they certainly don’t work.
I will stand for Election in May 2018 and I spend time listening to concerns across the Wardle and West Littleborough Ward.
The greatest is without doubt dangerous driving along the A58 from Wardle Road into Littleborough, followed by similar concerns about Wardle Road and Birch Road.
If members of our community are unable to report and comment upon their priority issues, they will not be recorded and ultimately they will not exist in the eyes of our council.
Frankly, this isn’t good enough, people have the right to be heard, council has a duty to listen and a responsibility to take positive action. Public safety is paramount.
I said there is no easy solution, however, I wonder when trafficcalming measures were last reviewed, when a speed awareness campaign was delivered or when offenders were last brought to justice.
This really could end up as a life and death situation and I for one am not prepared to stand by without trying to do something about it.
Furthermore, I want to see our elected Council adopt a similar approach. John Taylor Union Road I WAS sorry to see our council leader reverting to class warfare and brushing up his left wing credentials by referring to the ‘good’ people of Kirkholt as against the ‘la de la’ people of Saddleworth when commenting upon the latest Boundary Commission proposals.
Whilst not sinking to comment upon the veracity of such descriptions, democracy only works when the legitimate concerns of all constituents are respected regardless of their perceived position on the moral or income ladder.
Regarding the House of Lords, I would agree with him, and many others, that there are far too many members of the House of Lords and a cull could be made of those who do not contribute to the business of that House, which is to scrutinise and debate the policies emanating from the House of Commons and to advise accordingly.
But, equally there is an unfairness in the Parliamentary constituencies as presently constituted.
The boundaries were set when the populations in some areas were very different from today and the independent body of the Boundary Commission is trying to rectify this by making all constituencies have between roughly 71,000 – 78,000 electors.
Add to this the requirement to reduce the number of MPs to 600 from 650, still higher than some other countries’ legislative bodies, and it would be almost impossible to do this without drastic changes to boundaries, especially in large conurbations such as Greater Manchester. Felicity Guthrie
NO LA DE DA PEOPLE HERE
ON boundary changes the leader of the council is completely wrong .
The Saddleworth and Littleborough areas have much in common and we worked well as successful cohesive constituency for many years.
The Labour leader has shown his true colours by calling the people of Saddleworth la de da and by so doing has shown the residents of Wardle and Littleborough what he thinks of hard working people in the borough who stive to improve their lives and environment.
There is nothing la de da about the people I represent. Coun Ashley Dearnley
