Lighting up festive season
THE countdown to Christmas begins in Rochdale later this month.
The town centre’s Christmas lights switch-on takes place on Saturday, November 25.
Thousands are expected to attend the popular event that will include fireworks, a festive market and family activities in the town hall.
Frozen characters Elsa, Anna and Olaf will be making a special trip to the event to help Father Christmas officially switch-on the lights.
The children’s favourites will arrive at 4pm to meet and greet families ahead of the big switch on.
The market opens at 1pm, with a range of stalls in the Great Hall.
Seasonal food and drink will be served in a Christmas cafe and Wardle Community Brass Band will be performing yuletide favourites. The town hall will be bathed in colourful lights and there will also be Christmas storytelling and craft sessions for children.
Outside the town hall from 1pm there will be food and drink.
Coun Janet Emsley, the council’s cabinet member for culture, health and wellbeing, said: “This is always a fantastic event which gets the festive season off to a really exciting start. With a local festive market, food and drink, activities for the children and our spectacular firework display, there really is something for everyone. The stunning town hall is the perfect destination for this event and with the wonderful lighting effects we have planned it will look more magical than ever.”
This year’s event will signal the start of Rochdale’s festive celebrations.
