No happy return

- HARRY HANSON

IT was another frustrating week for Littleborough RUFC after they were beaten away from home against Aldwinians RUFC.

Having had no game for the past two weeks, Boro were looking forward to the game, especially with a slightly different team, but things didn’t go their way.

Littleborough kicked off and within a minute received a penalty kick, which was unfortunately missed, which occured three more times during the match, meaning 12 valueable points were discarded.

Soon Josh Park was making his strong attacking runs and Chris Kolbuck, back at scrum half for the first time this season, was seen making effective tackles.

Boro were enjoying the best of the early game with more strong tackling by Stuart Bairstow and from Michael Fletcher, who was back as hooker in the first fifteen.

On 25 minutes the hosts started to up their game and worked their way into the opposition 10 metres area where they camped for what seemed to be 10 to 15 minutes without breaking through and eventually Boro received a relieving penalty kick to ease the pressure.

Great defensive tackling from Fletcher followed, before Littleborough then scored their only successful penalty kick through Nigel Coop to take the first points of the game and lead 3-0 at half time.

The second half started with the match evenly played around the half way area, before Aldwinians finally got on the board when they crossed the line for the first try of the afternoon to take the lead, though there was no conversion.

Boro’s David Kearns and Ben Irving were working hard to bring their team back to the fore but unfortunately the home side were more attacking and converted a penalty to stretch their lead.

Littleborough came back but just couldn’t find that necessary quality breakthrough and then when Aldwinians broke away, Boro made a misjudgement and allowed their opponents to drop on the ball over the try line for a further five points, making the final score 13-3.

The defeat leaves Boro second bottom of the North Lancashire and Cumbria table. Next up for them is a home game against Burnley.
