Budget retailers reveal plans for new store

-

FIRST it was Tesco, then Aldi, but now it appears Littleborough is going to get a Lidl supermarket.

The budget retailer has this week announced plans to open a new store on Stockton Street.

Bosses say they will submit a planning application in the ‘next few weeks’.

Lidl UK’s regional head of property, Nick Harvey said: “We are delighted to be opening a new store in Littleborough, which marks another milestone in our ambitious store expansion programme.

“We’ve seen incredible demand for Lidl stores across the country and look forward to offering our quality products and incredible value to shoppers in and around Littleborough.

“We are firmly committed to helping boost the local economy by creating new jobs and working with local suppliers in the construction of the new store.

“The team are very much looking forward to submitting a planning application to Rochdale council in the next few weeks and updating local residents on our plans.”

Lidl becomes the third supermarket chain to show an interest in the site.

In 2014 Tesco was granted planning permission to open, but pulled out a few months later deciding a large supermarket in the area was “no longer appropriate”.

It came after a campaign against the plans dubbed ‘Keep Littleborugh Local’ was launched.

The campaign included a 1,300 signature petition, which was presented to councillors on the planning committee.

The following year Aldi were granted planning permission for a store on the site, but didn’t go ahead with the development.
