ALMOST £13,000 is to be spent repairing the car park at Milnrow Memorial Park.

The award-winning green flag park’s parking area is to be resurfaced after it started breaking up and then became unsafe following the recent bad weather.

Coun Neil Butterworth said: “The car park has been deteriorating over a number of years and is full of pot holes.

“The recent freezing weather has finally finished it off. The park is the jewel in Milnrow’s crown and very popular, so the car park is always very busy. It was becoming very dangerous for people visiting the park - and their cars.

“Council gardeners and the Friends of Milnrow Park do a fantastic job In making our village memorial park the best in the borough, but we must maintain it properly.

“I’m really pleased the Council has been able to find the cash when budgets are tight - but I’ll always fight to ensure Milnrow and Newhey gets its fair share. “

The work will be carried out by the end of the month. A bid for funding to repair footpaths and improve access to the park has been made and is expected to be carried out later in the year.

Earlier this month Coun Butterworth launched his Repair the Roads campaign to get pot holes filled across the borough and put an end to the years of under investment in highways maintenance. He said: “I have been inundated with requests and pictures of potholes and I’m determined to get them all filled in.

“I have had several meetings with the Leader of the Council to discuss innovative ways to raise the money needed to invest in repairing our roads and pavements. It’s the number one priority for local residents.”
