Boro end long wait for win

- HARRY HANSON

LITTLEBOROUGH RUFC finally ended their poor run of form and picked up a dominant victory after beating Burnley.

The team have been losing matches for the past three months, but they finally broke their hoodoo and won with a terrific score, with every Boro player giving their absolute all.

Due to hard overnight frost, the match had to be transferred to Burnley, meaning that the kick-off time was postponed by 15 minutes.

The match began with Littleborough in the ascendancy, and it didn’t take them long to ope the scoring with a penalty on seven minutes through Andy Walton.

Burnley tried to hit back, but Boro defended well and they managed to extend their lead when Josh Park touched down for his side’s opening try on the match, with Walton on hand to add the conversion.

Burnley hit back immediately, scoring a try of their own at the other end, but this would turn out to be their only points of the match.

It was all Littleborough from that point onwards, and they a good distance kick from Walton allowed Chris Park to go over for his team’s second try. Walton was able to keep up his kicking accuracy by scoring the conversion.

Burnley were struggling to cope with the constant pressure that their opponents were putting them under and Boro extended their lead further when Adam Wayne ran in his side’s third try just before half-time. Walton kicked through the posts to make it 27-5 to Littleborough at the interval.

Boro were still on the front foot in the second time and this time it was the great run from Murgatroyd that brought yet another try for the away side. Walton was proving to be clinical with his conversions, and it was the case once again as he successfully added the extras.

Despite a huge lead, Littleborough didn’t take their foot off the gas and continued to dominate proceedings, and David Kearns touched down to bring up the fifth try.

With their lead surely intact, Boro decided to bring on some of their reserve players to get some vital experience. The new players helped to contribute to their sixth try of the game, with winger Liam Lloyd collecting the ball and going over to extend the lead even further.

Matthew Goldthorpe scored the seventh try, before Josh Park put the finishing touches and the extremely impressive win by crossing the line for his team’s eighth and final try of the match, making the final score 54-5.

It was an outstanding win by Boro, and a much needed boost after their poor run of form. They’ll now try and build on the victory when they are next in action on Saturday at home against local rivals Oldham.

Littleborough remain second bottom in the North Lancs/Cumbria table, with Burnley one place below them. This weekend’s opponents Oldham are in sixth place, and will head into the match against Boro on the back of a 17-0 defeat to Keswick on Saturday.
