Town hit again as ‘mini

HEAVY snow and high winds battered Rochdale as the ‘mini Beast from the East’ hit the town over the weekend.

The adverse weather caused some disruption to transport, with buses especially affected. First, Stagecoach and Local Link bus routes were hit.

Local Link services in Kingsway, Middleton and Heywood were cancelled.

In a statement on Sunday, Transport for Greater Manchester said: “Although most bus services are operating normally, the weather conditions are affecting bus travel in some areas of Greater Manchester, particularly Oldham, Rochdale and Tameside.

“Passengers are advised to check with the bus operator or visit their website or social media pages for the very latest information before travelling.”

But there was no repeat of the problems on the M62 faced earlier this month, and the M66 was also passable, with motorists being advised to drive with care.

Trans Pennine Express trains between Manchester and Sheffield were cancelled because of a heavy snowdrift in Derbyshire, and commuters wanting to get to the other side of the Pennines had to travel via Leeds.

Council gritters were also sent out in the early hours of Sunday.

Rochdale council wrote on Facebook on Sunday: “Our grit crews with ploughs on have been up treating the network since 2am this morning.

“They are going to be continuing this on the main road network until the snowfall stops. We are also clearing town centre footpath routes.”
