Skiing in the park and it’s presentation time for awards and a TV

●●10 Years ago:

SNOWFALL on Easter Sunday saw scores of people take to their sledges and skis, rather than the anticipated Easter egg hunts.

The icy blast covered Rochdale in a blanket of snow, which children and adults alike were keen to make the most of before it melted.

In Springfield Park, the scene was more like Christmas than Easter.

Among those found sledging and skiing was Claire Gilbert, on a visit from Melbourne, Australia, who said she’s never seen snow before and was least expecting it in Rochdale at Easter. OBSERVER music reviewer Dr Joe Dawson had been hitting the right notes to gain a certificate in legal studies on an Open University course.

Dr Dawson has been a regular contributor to the Observer for more than 20 years and had also held senior posts in schools and colleges and been teaching music privately for 11 years.

He said: “I am a kind of a perpetual student, but felt like a change from my previous studies in music and education.

“The Open University has been a fantastic learning experience.”

He had previously gained an MEd in aesthetics, a doctorate and several diplomas in music.

The decision to register on the course came about after Dr Dawson had a personal legal problem with a planning application.

It made him realise that he needed to know more legal matters, not to save money or become a lawyer, but because he realised that knowledge was power. AN OUTSTANDING role model from St Patrick’s Primary School has received the Childer Award as official recognition of his efforts.

Callum Ogden, a Year 6 pupil, was presented with the prize by Geraldine Greatbank, from the sponsor Supertots Nursery, during a special St Patrick’s Day assembly at the school.

The youngster was selected by the staff after displaying a positive attitude and always trying his best to help others, particularly younger children.

Monica Walczak, the associate headteacher, said: “The staff and children felt Callum was a deserving winner.

“He works very hard in school and always tries his best.

“Throughout his time at the school, he’s been a friend to many younger children in the playground.

“He’s very reliable and trustworthy, as well as being a talented sportsman.

“He plays rugby for Mayfield and always enjoys sharing stories of his success. He’s a perfect role model.”

Callum’s fanatical about his favourite rugby team Leeds Rhinos, but this sometimes brings him into conflict with the headteacher Brendan Duffy - because he’s a St Helen’s supporter.

Mrs Walczak added: “They have a great rivalry, but it’s good natured.

“Callum has an excellent sense of humour and is very popular with staff and pupils alike.” THE UNITED Co-operative Milnrow Brass Band celebrated its members’ great achievements at the annual ball.

The event was held at Milnrow Cricket Club and the presentations of annual awards for outstanding achievement were made by musical director, John Ward.

The winner of the bandsperson of the year was Frances Thewlis, who plays the solo horn.

Mrs Thewlis was described as a ‘true loyal banding anorak’ having played right up until the birth of her son, George, and returning to the band to the band just a few weeks afterwards.

Awards were also presented to Ben Wright for player of the year and Sarah Owen for most improved player.

The event also celebrated St Patrick’s day with members wearing Guinness hats and music being provided by fourpiece Irish group The Quiet Man.

Band president, Ken Watts, said: “The dance floor was full for most of the night, everybody enjoyed themselves, the party lasted till midnight.” THE old television at the Rochdale Children’s Moorland Home was replaced with a new topof-the-range model, thanks to a charity cheque for £600.

Children visiting the home could now look forward to watching their favourite programmes on a flat-screen TV and DVD, bought through the Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund.

Beryl Varley, chairman of homes committee, said: “It was presented to us by David Forbes, retired deputy lieutenant of Greater Manchester.” SUDDEN sisters were doing it for themselves on International Women’s Day.

Visitors to the community centre, on Cheltenham Street, joined in the celebrations taking place throughout the world.

International Women’s Day started almost a century ago, but it was the first time Sudden residents had taken part.

A fashion show featured youngsters wearing their best outfits and local women showed off their culinary skills in a cookery contest.

Centre administrator Abida Shah said she was delighted to see so many people at the event.

She said: “I thought it was a good way of getting local residents involved as a whole community.

“As a community centre we try to highlight the achievements of people in the area and that includes women.” ●●United Co-operative Milnrow Brass Band celebrated St Patrick’s day at their annual ball.
