Hamer in action on three fronts

-

IT was a busy period for Hamer Boxing Club recently as they were involved in three different shows in quick succession.

The week began with Hamer making the long journey up north to Bishop Auckland with 10-year-old Macaulay “Cool Hand” Evans and 15-year-old Aeron “The Viking” Maddocks.

Macaulay was the first boxer to enter the ring that night in front of a lively crowd but he showed no nerves as he stood toe to toe with his opponent Mason Beasley of Bishop Auckland ABC, and whilst both boxers traded punches in the middle of the ring the crowd collectively stood to to it’s feet in appreciation.

This went on throughout all three rounds with great work rate from both boxers and although it was a skills bout where nobody gained the verdict, both boxers received a standing ovation for such a terrific opening bout and both boxers had their hands raised in triumph.

It was another four and a half hour wait before Aeron climbed into the ring but he wasted no time in locking horns with the crowd favourite Gavin Allinson Chambers, also of Bishop Auckland.

The bell rang for the first round and the Hamer youngster instantly forced his opponent into the ropes where he began to unload heavy blows to both the body and head to take the first round.

The Rochdale boxer came out again in round two to silence the crowd as he continued to take the fight to his opponent with crisp and powerful combinations.

Chambers suddenly came alive and landed two cracking hooks to the head of the Hamer boxer and the partisan crowd roared its voice in delight until Aeron answered with a terrifically timed rear hand uppercut which sent Chambers head up into the air.

In the third and last round the Hamer boxer show great fitness as continued to pursue his opponent around the ring whilst throwing punishing combinations.

Chambers was starting to tire by now and it showed as he landed only the occasional reply and with ten seconds to go the Hamer boxer forced Chambers onto the ropes to land more hurtful punches to the body and head to take all three rounds by unanimous decision.

Hamer’s next event a few days later saw 11-year-old Allana “Top Banana” Shaw meet the unbeaten Lilly Deacon of Rourkeys Gym ABC at the Tameside Elite Boxing Academy in Stalybridge.

Allana came out of the red corner in the first round to meet her lively opponent who continually pushed forward whilst hoping to land her big left hand punch but the Hamer youngster showed great skills to evade the punch by moving out of range before stepping back into range to land fast counter-punches.

This continued throughout the round as Allana showed a terrific range of punching with great movement. It got a bit untidy during the start of the second round with Deacon upping the action as she tried to get back into the contest and Allana struggled to find her range.

Then the Hamer lass landed a terrific right hand uppercut and a left hook to the head, followed by a strong right hand to the chin as Deacon stayed upon the ropes. The combination clearly hurt the unbeaten Bradford girl and she began to stand off Allana who continued to press her opponent onto the ropes but with ten seconds to go in the round the Rourkey’s boxers began to take the fight back to her Hamer opponent.

The ingredients where there for a cracking third and last round and has both girls met in the middle of the ring it was Allana who began to land crisp and fast three and four punch combinations as her opponent moved in.

Although she was very tired by now, Deacon continued to press forward only to be met by straight punches from the Hamer boxer that continually knocked her head back and with ten seconds to go Allana landed another right hand uppercut to the jaw and a left hook to the head to take the contest by unanimous decision.

Their most recent event then had 15-yearold Aman Hafeez putting in a terrific performance when he entered the ring for the very first time against Kai Whitehead of Littleborough Boxing Club

Both boxers stood toe to toe whilst exchanging punishing blows upon each other throughout the entire three rounds but in the end the victory was awarded to Whitehead via a very close split-decision.

Hamer coach Steven Connellan said “We had Aman matched and ready to box a couple of weeks ago, only to be told that his opponent hadn’t turned up.

“The boxing season is coming to an end soon so we desperately wanted to get him a match before then and when the opportunity to box Whitehead came up we decided to take it although the Littleborough lad had entered the ring before on six previous occasions. “It was a very entertaining contest for the fans which could have gone ether way but in the end Whitehead’s experience give him the edge.”
