Brilliant Boro in Burnley blitz

- HARRY HANSON

LITTLEBOROUGH RUFC picked up their biggest win of the season after a dominant victory over Burnley RUFC at Rakewood Road.

The whole team had a part to play in the match, not just the try scorers but also captain Andy Walton for his excellent conversions.

Boro were quick out of the blocks at the start of the match, as winger Adam Sanderson touched down for a try and Walton added the conversion to put the hosts ahead after just five minutes.

This was just the beginning, as it was quickly followed by wing forward Jake Castree going over for the first of his two tries, again with the conversion from Walton.

The third converted try was brought up by Chris Park, putting Littleborough in an extremely dominant position with only 10 minutes on the clock.

Eight minutes later a great wing run by Sanderson meant he got his second try.

Next came another great run from second rower Murphy Holt, but Boro couldn’t get the try on this occasion and Burnley tried to hit back when they took the game down into Boro’s 10 metres area, where Matthew Goldthorpe had to show good defensive skills.

A great break by Walton up to Burnley’s 22 metres area led to him sending a pass to his supporting fullback George Roberts, who crossed the line for a further try, but there was no conversion on this occasion.

On 30 minutes there was another try by ring winger Jack Whittles, before Goldthorpe got in on the act himself when he successfully went over for the first of his two tries.

Littleborough weren’t done there, as they continued to dominate before the break as Richard Taylor got the final try of the half, with Walton adding the extras to put their team in an incredible position at half-time.

The second half saw Paul Fino come on for Josh Park and immediately he joined in an attack and crossed the line for a terrific try.

Boro were picking up right where they left off, and a great wing run by Roberts plus a short kick forward resulted in Taylor’s second try with no conversion.

He wasn’t finished there, as Taylor then went on another great attacking run for a further Littleborough try, with Walton converting.

Burnley still tried to threaten and there was some pressure on Boro’s five metres line, but the hosts defended well and prevented their opponents from scoring.

Sam Dickinson and Ted Chadwick were then replaced with Josh Park and Stuart Bairstow, and a great wing run by Roberts ended in the ball going out to Park to score.

Further continuous pressure from Boro ended with yet another try for Goldthorpe, while in the closing stages Castree and Park touched down again to complete the dominant and memorable 97-0 win.

The victory over Burnley means that Littleborough keep up their good run of form having won their last three league matches, and leaves them 11th in the North Lancs/ Cumbria table.
