It’s record Joy for new king of pile high club

-

IT’S official: the Guinness World Record for the tallest stack of tortillas belongs to Manchester, via Rochdale.

The tower, made by Joy Ehsan from Wardleworth, was made up of 389 individual tortillas and measured a whopping 68.5cm (26.96in) in height.

The world-beating stack was painstakingly put together, one tortilla on top of another, in the Baab-e-Salaam Banqueting Hall on Cottenham Lane, Salford.

Joy, a 34-year-old manager at the venue, succeeded in breaking the tortilla tower record – previously set at a music festival in Texas, on his very first attempt.

The dad-of-one said: “I just wanted to do something a little different.

“I hope by bringing this world record from Texas to Manchester, it will inspire other young people to do the same.

“It was also an opportunity to show my creativity and human abilities, like I said, I wanted to do something a little different.”

The previous record had been set by the news website Mashable at the South by Southwest film and music festival in Texas last year.

He submitted evidence of his achievement on August 26, 2017, to the Guinness World Records adjudicators to verify the attempt’s legitimacy and after a lengthy review process he became the proud owner of a coveted world record certificate.

Joy said that he wanted to share his achievement with the community and inspire future generations of hopeful record breakers.

He said: “A number of members of staff were there and I did have support from the management team, so obviously it would be unfair of me to take all the credit myself!”

When they’re not being used in recordbreaking attempts, tortillas are unleavened flatbread wraps found most commonly in North and Central American cuisine.

After achieving world record glory, Joy has now set his sights on other records published by Guinness.

He has already entered an application to make an attempt to break the record for the world’s tallest stack of chairs, currently set at 5.045 m (16ft 6.62 in).

The Baab-e-Salaam record-breakers have had a first run at the additional record, but say they’re going to need to source stronger chairs if they are going to pull the attempt off.

Joy and his tortilla stack join the multitude of Manchester’s other quirky world record-setting luminaries.

Chemists at the University of Manchester used molecular strands to make the world’s tightest knot last year, and a bus-sized ballet tutu was unveiled in Piccadilly Gardens by Stagecoach in support of Prevent Breast Cancer.
