‘Sexy’ bus station on list for top award
ROCHDALE Interchange is in the running to be named Greater Manchester’s ‘Building of the Decade’.
It’s been shortlisted alongside four other landmark buildings from the last 10 years in the contest run by BBC North West Tonight.
Announcing the news on its Facebook page Rochdale council wrote: “Who says a bus station can’t be sexy?!
“Our eco-friendly transport interchange has been shortlisted for BBC North West People’s Choice Building of the Decade!”
The other buildings in the running were Maggie’s at the Christie, NOMA Co-op HQ, Oldham town hall and Whitworth Gallery Extension.
The winner will then be in the running to be named North West Building of the Decade, a title won by Grandstand at Aintree Racecourse when the contest was last held in 2008.
NWT presenter Stuart Flinders will present a series of reports on winning buildings from around the region throughout next week, with the overall winer announced on Friday.
Mr Flinders said: “Some of the shortlisted buildings have fascinating back stories and are really important to the communities in which they’re located, so it’s not just about aesthetics and architecture.”
The £11.5m Rochdale Interchange opened on Smith Street in November 2013, replacing the old bus station opposite it.
It is partly powered by a giant ‘Archimedes’ screw in the River Roch.
