Man charged with invading pitch during derby clash

AMAN has been charged with running onto the pitch - and possessing cocaine - during the League One derby game between Rochdale and Oldham Athletic on Tuesday.

Police said Daniel Brennan, 27, from Oldham, was due to appear in court next month.

He was arrested by police at Rochdale’s Crown Oil Arena ground after an incident towards the end of the first half and charged overnight, Greater Manchester Police said.

Mr Brennan has been charged with three offences in total, the force said.

He’s charged with pitch encroachme­nt under the Football Offences Act 1991; possession of a class A drug, namely cocaine; and a section 4 public order offence of using threatenin­g, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of, or provoke, unlawful violence.

A GMP spokesman said Mr Brennan was released and was due to make a first court appearance at Manchester and Salford magistrate­s’ court on May 9.

No exact address for him in Oldham has been revealed.

Speaking after the game, Oldham Athletic manager Richie Wellens said: “Got loads of fans here who were brilliant and behaved.”

Police meanwhile have confirmed there were two other arrests related to the match, both outside the ground after the final whistle.
