Happy mix for a charity bash
THE SG6 T20 cricket match was played at Rochdale CC on Monday and a good crowd was treated to some quality with both bat and ball.
Raising funds for the Stephen Gartland Foundation, the event saw Rochdale Cricket Club entertain their rugby league counterparts, Rochdale Mayfield.
The teams, captained by Jack Duffy of RCC and Aidy Gleeson of Mayfield, entertained from start to finish.
Rochdale pro Ed Moore knocked up a rapid fifty before sportingly stepping down. Not to be outdone, Mayfield’s replacement pro, Henry Cooper, mirrored the feat in an anything you can do type innings.
Cooper was drafted in at short notice when RCC chairman Mark Reynolds opted to disqualify Mayfield’s original choice of pro on the grounds of, ‘well I wanted to win this one!’.
It was a close fought contest which went all the way to the wire but finished in a drawn game despite a sterling effort from Ben Ryan Davis, who showed he’s lost none of the skills he picked up as a youngster at Rochdale.
Donations on the gate, a raffle and a homemade cake sale organised by Kate Gilbertson saw a total on the day of £760 raised for the foundation, although it was suggested that most of that came from the sweep on how long it would take Brad Gartland to take his shirt off, which was won by Pete Duffy with 58 seconds on the clock.
Pete happily donated his prize back to the fund.
