Rise in the price of dripping gave food for thought

●●FOOD CONTROL FACTS

Dripping prices fixed Under the Home Melt Tallow and Grease (Maximum Prices) Order, the maximum retail price of dripping on and after June 24 is fixed at 1s 10d a pound.

Dripping is, at present, obtainable in Rochdale at 1s 6d. Under the order, the article must not contain more than one per cent of water and impurities together, or more than two per cent of free fatty acids.

Cheese distributi­on The government is now undertakin­g the control of home cheese, of which the distributi­on will be through trade channels.

Applicatio­ns for forms for British made cheese must be made by retailers at the Food Control Office.

Imported cheeses will be distribute­d as before, by means of trade and the open market.

Sandwich loaf and rolls - Slight alteration­s in a new bread order pursuit of the sale of the onepiece sandwich loaf and rolls of any weight over 2oz.

Bacon and ham - Under certain conditions caterers are now allowed to sell, free of coupons, bacon and ham.

●●FEW BREAD BAKERS LEFT

The Rochdale District Master Bakers’ Associatio­n has sent a resolution to local Food Control Committees and Tribunals viewing with alarm any further calling up of bread bakers other than youths of 18.

The resolution points to the scarcity of men, and says they are working 65 to 70 hours a week.

If many more are taken, a bread famine is feared.

●●WAR CASUALTIES

Whilst on a journey “up the line” with a transport column on May 28, Lance-Corporal Frank Tetlow, of the Army Service Corps, was hit by a shell and killed instantly. He was 27 years of age. His widow resides at 2 Walkden Street, off Whitworth Road, Rochdale.

Mrs Lord of 73 Primrose Street, Rochdale, has been officially informed of the death of her son, Private Fred Lord, of the Lancashire Fusiliers, in action on April 5. He was 34 years of age. For a considerab­le period, he was employed by Carter Bros., engineers, Bridge Street, Rochdale.

He was a member of the Rochdale Brotherhoo­d, and his name is on the roll of honour at the Union Street Chapel.

●●LOCAL AMUSEMENTS

The Public Hall - Set in beautiful scenery, The War Mother, a delightful Scottish story of present day, is being screened at the Public Hall, Baillie Street, this weekend. Virginia Pearson plays the principal part in the piece. ●●FIFTY YEARS AGO

The Hopwood Fire Brigade hereby challenge to run a drill against any other brigade within six miles of Heywood, either private or towns’ engines, and will drill with one man, or up to six men, either with stand pipe or with suction, for the sum of £5 or £10.
