Mayfield out to play on travel bug

-

MAYFIELD face Thatto Heath today in the Kingstone Press NCL premier division at the Mayfield Sports Centre.

Thatto have had a decent season so far occupying fourth spot, but they don’t have the best record away from home with all four of their defeats coming on the road.

Mayfield will take heart from this and have worked hard in training to make sure they have a good start to the game and exploit the visitors lack of confidence on away trips.

Coaches Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth gave the lads a week off last week and they are looking fresh and rested after the break.

Team selection will be tricky today as they try to find that half back pairing they have been looking for this season so they may ‘jiggle’ things about in an attempt to get it right.

Calland and Butterworth are both winners with a winning mentality so the poor results this season have been frustrating to them and they are trying their best to get things right – hopefully today’s side will click and this will see them on the road to recovery after their poor start.

Calland said: “We know we are good enough, we have just lost a bit of confidence. One good win could put that right and today would be a good day for that to happen.”

There will be a minute’s silence before today’s game to mark the passing of ex player and long time supporter of the club, Neil Howarth.

Howie had been associated with the club since the 1960s and was a familiar face always there with a laugh and a joke and always with a song ready.

Howie will be sadly missed and thoughts at the club are with his family.
